Let’s talk about a legendary association and about an album that is equally important. Let’s talk about Julian “Cannonball” Adderley and Miles Davis. Let’s talk about Somethin’ Else. There has always been speculation whether the album was by the alto saxophonist who makes the blues capsize with happiness (or who plays it like a “big motherfucker”, to quote Miles’ unfiltered autobiography), or an album by the trumpeter who, at that point in his career, had never been heard on an LP by another leader (even though he had participated on plenty of 78rpm singles with Cannonball’s hero, Charlie Parker, during the previous decade). To tell the truth, it doesn’t matter, because the former’s intoxicating flavors and the latter’s spicy brass work wonders. “Autumn Leaves” and “Love for Sale” will never mean the same after listening to this album, this masterpiece of the 1950’s which hasn’t aged at all today in 2020. Yes, Somethin’ Else is really somethin’ else.
